Sights, Attractions
Sights, Attractions, and Activities
Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd): The bridge was constructed between the years of 1839 and 1849 and is Budapest's most famous bridge across the Danube. It replaced an older floating bridge at the same site. It takes its name from the large, more than 375 meters long suspension chains, which run through the support pillars.
Roosevelt Square: This square is mostly known for its proximity to the Chain Bridge and its role as an access point to the public transport network of Budapest.
Buda Castle District (Várnegyed): The Castle District is part of the city's first district and is part of the historical town centre. The castle complex itself is Hungary's largest building and a popular sight. However, the district offers many other sights and attractions, such as the Viennese Gate, Trinity Square, and Fisherman's Bastion.
Vörösmarty Square (Vörösmarty tér): This pedestrian-only town square is named after the poet Mihály Vörösmarty. The famous Café Gerbeaud, a large Vörösmarty monument, and a large number of stores are close by.
Váci Street (Váci utca): One of the famous shopping streets on the Pest side of town, it features numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants. It terminates in Vörösmarty Square on one side and runs all the way down to the Great Market Hall.
St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent István-bazilika): The basilica is Budapests's largest church. Construction was started in the mid-19th century, but due to various problems it was not completed until 1905.
Great Synagogue or Dohány Street Synagogue: It is the largest synagogue in Europe and was constructed in the 19th century. The interior features rich decorations and a large organ. The Jewish Museum, which is built on the site of Theodor Herzl's home, is also part of the Synagogue.
Great Market Hall: Constructed in the last decade of the 19th century, the Hall has been a place of trade and commerce since then. Up to the 1930s it served as a traditional market. Today it is a shopping centre with almost 200 shops, a supermarket, and a fish market.
Hungarian State Opera House: The Opera House was constructed between 1875 and 1884 in a Neorenaissance style with some Baroque elements.
Hősök tere (Heroes' Square): Planning for the square started with the Millennium-Celebration in 1896, but construction lasted until 1929.The Millennium Monument is at the centre of the square.
Városliget (City Park): This large park in the middle of Budapest is the city's largest park. A number of sights and attraction are located inside, such as the zoo, an amusement park, and the Széchenyi Medicinal Baths.
Parliament: This Neogothic edifice is one of the largest buildings worldwide. It is modelled after London's Westminster Palace and is built on the banks of the Danube.
Gellért Hill (Gellért-hegy): The Hill is named in honour of St. Gellért, who was thrown to his death from the top of this hill. The hill was also said to be a meeting place of witches. It offers a spectacular view of the city. Other sights include the citadel, the Gellért Hill Church, which is built inside a cave, and the Liberty Memorial statue.
Margaret Island (Margit-sziget): This island in the Danube may be reached via the Margaret Bridge and is a large park, which makes it an attractive destination for day trips.
